Rachel’s Story

“At 25, I was feeling as fit and healthy as I had ever been. That all changed when I felt a lump in my breast.

After numerous doctors’ appointments and biopsies, I received a phone call telling me I had breast cancer. Suddenly, my life revolved around appointments, fertility treatment before having my ovaries temporarily shut down, hours sitting in a chair receiving chemotherapy, and decisions I had never expected to face.

I underwent six months of chemotherapy, followed by another six months of hormone-targeted therapy, a double mastectomy, three further surgeries, and five years of daily tablets and monthly injections.

Cancer is difficult at any age, but being single and in my twenties made the experience feel especially isolating.

The day of my double mastectomy was the day the final 1 mm of cancer was removed from my body.

I know my priorities now. I live for experiences and for doing the things—and spending time with the people and animals—I love.”
